A high-end, networkable printer, the LaserJet 2000 offered a duty cycle of 70,000 pages per month and the standard 300-dpi output, initially priced at $19,995. It also included 512 kilobytes of memory, which was sufficient to print graphics at 300 dpi that covered about 70% of the letter-size page area. It introduced "soft fonts", treatments like bold and italic and other features including a parallel ( Centronics) interface. The LaserJet Plus followed in September 1985, priced at US$3,995. Although unsupported by HP, because the Laserjet used the same basic PCL language (PCL Level III) spoken by HP's other printers it was possible to use the Laserjet on HP 3000 multiuser systems. By using control codes it was possible to change the printed text style using font patterns stored in permanent ROM in the printer. The first LaserJet was a high-speed replacement for text-only daisy wheel impact printers and the noisy dot matrix printers. It was quiet compared to other contemporary printers, hence people could use the telephone while sitting near the HP LaserJet. It was ideal for printing memos, letters, and spreadsheets. The HP LaserJet printer had high print quality, could print horizontally or vertically and produce graphics. Due to the high cost of memory, the first LaserJet only had 128 kilobytes of memory, and a portion of that was reserved for use by the controller. It used an 8 MHz Motorola 68000 processor and could print in a variety of character fonts. It was a 300- dpi, 8 ppm printer that sold for $3,495 with the price reduced to $2,995 in September 1985.

Gotta wonder what the "search for drivers online" feature of Windows is really used for. that are also of course compatible with Windows 10. This should list a set of drivers for Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, etc. Open IE (won't work in Firefox or Chrome).

Now, for those of us who know better and still want to do our Windows printing through a trusted HP LaserJet, the procedure to obtain the drivers is as follows (should work for the whole range of old HP printers, and not just the 6P): On the other hand, that probably means you'll be able to find a cheap one on ebay. But that means the need for a driver on Windows, and Windows 7 considers that the HP printing dinosaurs are too old to be supported by default. Now, I did spend some time getting cups going, but I found it a bit flaky, so I reverted to direct samba access to the raw device. Add a USB → IEEE1284 adapter, plug into a NAS or plug computer, and enjoy your network printer. Plus, 5 years on, and I'm still using the toner cartridge that came with the printer. From the time where printer manufacturers were still producing near indestructible models.
